James first became aware of Go during the AlphaGo - Lee Sedol match in 2016, but did not start playing regularly and seriously until 2025. He became BGA Secretary in 2026.
Outside of Go, James is an academic at the University of Leicester, and spends a lot of time messing around with lasers.
